When planning a trip to Tibet, it’s important to keep in mind certain dates of events and festivals that may impact your experience or offer unique opportunities for exploration.

Losar (Tibetan New Year): Losar is one of the most important festivals in Tibet, typically celebrated in February or March according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. It’s a time of vibrant festivities, cultural performances, and religious rituals.

Saga Dawa: This festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha, and it usually falls in May or June. It’s a significant time for pilgrimages, particularly around Mount Kailash.

Shoton Festival: Also known as the Yoghurt Festival, Shoton usually takes place in August. It marks the end of the monks’ summer retreat, and there are various cultural performances, including Tibetan opera, along with the offering of yogurt to the public.

Ganden Thangka Festival: Held at Ganden Monastery near Lhasa in June or July, this festival features the unveiling of a giant thangka painting depicting Buddha. Pilgrims from all over Tibet gather to witness this event.
